Luck in poker
Description: Is poker a game of luck or a game of skill? There’s no doubt that there’s some luck in poker, but it’s been proven that skill is important too.
The question “Is poker a game of luck, or a game of skill?” has been asked many times. In fact it’s still being considered in some countries of the world, because gambling legislation often places more restrictions on games of luck than it does games of skill.
Luck is certainly an important element in poker, but most studies agree that skill is more important. The most recent study, performed by Cigital Inc, proved that poker is indeed a game of skill. The study, titled “Statistical Analysis of Texas Holdem”, addressed the issue of luck in poker by looking at the best poker hands available to each player in a series of games, and considering the number of times the best hands won, versus the number of times the outcome was left to chance.
Cigital discovered that more than 75% of the time, the hands did not go to showdown. This means that luck was not a factor in those hands. Of the remaining hands, the overall best hand won about 50 percent of the time. If you break that down, it means that in around 12% of poker games, the best overall hand will win. The other 88% of the time, the winner is the person who is playing the best, rather than the person with the best hands.
So, the effect of luck in poker isn’t as pronounced as most people think. Luck can help beginner players, but for most people it is confidence, betting patterns, and knowledge of position and hand probabilities that makes a good player.
Next time you’re losing in poker online, don’t blame it on Lady Luck. Re-evaluate your table behaviour, and see what you can improve upon. A good player can win even if they aren’t getting the best possible cards. You can minimise the effect of luck in poker if you practice these skills and follow the basic poker tips offered on the best online poker sites.
