PostHeaderIcon Luck in poker

Description:  Is poker a game of luck or a game of skill?  There’s no doubt that there’s some luck in poker, but it’s been proven that skill is important too.

The question “Is poker a game of luck, or a game of skill?” has been asked many times.  In fact it’s still being considered in some countries of the world, because gambling legislation often places more restrictions on games of luck than it does games of skill.

Luck is certainly an important element in poker, but most studies agree that skill is more important.  The most recent study, performed by Cigital Inc, proved that poker is indeed a game of skill.  The study, titled “Statistical Analysis of Texas Holdem”, addressed the issue of luck in poker by looking at the best poker hands available to each player in a series of games, and considering the number of times the best hands won, versus the number of times the outcome was left to chance.

Cigital discovered that more than 75% of the time, the hands did not go to showdown.  This means that luck was not a factor in those hands.  Of the remaining hands, the overall best hand won about 50 percent of the time.   If you break that down, it means that in around 12% of poker games, the best overall hand will win.  The other 88% of the time, the winner is the person who is playing the best, rather than the person with the best hands.

So, the effect of luck in poker isn’t as pronounced as most people think.  Luck can help beginner players, but for most people it is confidence, betting patterns, and knowledge of position and hand probabilities that makes a good player.

Next time you’re losing in poker online, don’t blame it on Lady Luck.  Re-evaluate your table behaviour, and see what you can improve upon.  A good player can win even if they aren’t getting the best possible cards.  You can minimise the effect of luck in poker if you practice these skills and follow the basic poker tips offered on the best online poker sites.

Casinos rise and fall faster than you can blink an eye. The first casino was opened in 1941 on the Los Vegas strip; however by 1992 all of those casinos had been demolished to make way for new modern casinos. Casino games are fun, but sometimes it’s a good idea to research first, learn the rules, and then go to the casino armed with your understanding of the rules. One of the most popular casino games is video poker. You can find video poker pretty much everywhere – casinos, bars, internet even restaurants in certain areas. Almost every online casino has video poker, so it is very easy to find. The game itself is very simple. You bet 1-5 coins depending on your preferences, the game deals 5 cards, and you choose the cards you wish to keep. The cards you have discarded will be replaced with fresh cards, just like in a game of 5-card draw. Once you have your final hand, you will be paid if, and only if, you have a winning hand. A winning hand is usually a pair of jacks or better, but certain variations such as tens or better have lower minimum winning combinations. Basically, there are ten possible hands. From highest is Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, Pair and the lowest is High Card (If no one else in the game has any of the above combinations, the person with the highest card in their hand wins). So what are you waiting for? Familiarize yourself with casino rules and get started having fun!

PostHeaderIcon Poker Strategies

Who loves poker? Everybody loves poker!! Although it has always been an exciting card game, lately it has gained mounting popularity and has shown us through tournaments such as “The World Series of Poker” that even an average Joe, who has been playing the game for a relatively short amount of time, can walk away a millionaire. The way to win is to devise your own way of playing the game by building from a variety of tried and true Poker strategies available for you to learn. Poker is one of the famous game in online gambling.

The most important trick for a beginning Poker player to learn is how to “read” the other players. Unless you have an absolutely stellar hand that you are certain will win, then the strategy of reading your opposing players, to help determine what you should do with your own hand, is essential. You should begin by taking a few hands to observe your fellow players. Try to uncover if there are any habits your opponents have that coincide with a good hand or a bluff. Most great players try to conceal anything that could give away their hand, however, there may be very small, almost unnoticeable, things they are unaware of. Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon No Limit Texas Holdem Strategy

texas-holdem-betting-strategyIf you like watching No Limit Texas Holdem Poker, then you would probably enjoy playing the game yourself. There are several ways to join a game. For instance, you could invite a few buddies over for a weekly game or play in one of the many online tournaments. If you do decide to play, you will want to devise your own strategy to the game. You can try this without risk at free casinos.

First, since it is difficult to get more than a flush or off-suit straight in this style of Poker, you may want to learn how to bluff. To bluff effectively takes practice and an awareness of what you are or are not doing when it is your turn. This is because if you have a small nervous habit it may give you away to opposing players, especially if they are experienced.

Keep in mind that bluffing is only important to learn if you are playing in real-life games. If you are playing online, bluffing is usually easier to pull off since no one can see you. One of the only things that may be able to give you away is if you take a suspiciously long time during your turn or if you have a habit of “chatting” to try distracting the other players.

As for card strategies, the most important may be to continue to call or raise the pot before the flop if you have a great Blackjack hand. This would mean if you have any combination of 10, J, Q, K, or A. Do not fold before the flop if you have a hand such as that, even if you need to go all in.

Lastly, you should not pay a high price (i.e. continue to bet) to see the flop if you are dealt low cards that are not paired up in your hand. This will usually not pay off and you will just end up losing your money. Furthermore, if you do get to see the flop and it contains three cards that can make up a run or flush, then it is best to fold then and there if you don’t have the hand to beat a run or flush. Someone is bound to have the other two cards needed and they will also be unlikely to fold them.

Knowing what to do with a great hand, when to play a medium hand, and how to bluff when it is most important are the keys to winning at No Limit Texas Holdem Poker. The more you play, the better you will become at deciding what to do with your hand, especially when a tight decision needs to be made. Keep the above strategy tips in mind during your next game and you will be off to a running start!

PostHeaderIcon Calculating Poker Odds

poker-oddsDo you like math?? When it comes to calculating poker odds, math is your best friend. So,,love math, hahaha

Here is the tips to calculating poker odds:

Hand Odds

The chance of you making a particular hand in poker. Example: If you have two spades in your hand and there are two spades on the flop, then your hand odds for getting that flush are 2:1. For every 3 times that this hand comes up for you, you will get your flush once. If the odds are 3:1 then you would get your hand once every four times it came around.

To calculate hand odds, use the following formula:

X to 1 odds = you get your hand once every (X + 1) times

OR

X to 1 odds = 1/ (X + 1) = % chance of getting your hand

This translates to, for example:

3 to 1 odds = 1/ 4 = 25% chance of getting your hand

Here are your odds of hitting an out by the river:

Outs Flop% Turn% Flop Odds Turn Odds Draw Type
2 8% 4% 12 22 Pocket Pair – Set
3 13% 7% 7 14 Single Overcard Draw
4 17% 9% 5 10 Gut Shot, Two Pair – Full House
5 20% 11% 4 8 One Pair – Two Pair or Set
6 24% 13% 3.2 6.7 No Pair – Pair, Two Overcard

Draw
7 28% 15% 2.6 5.6 Set – Full House
8 32% 17% 2.2 4.7 Open Straight Draw
9 35% 19% 1.9 4.1 Flush Draw, Open+Backdoor

Draw
10 38% 22% 1.6 3.6
11 42% 24% 1.4 3.2
12 45% 26% 1.2 2.8 Flush+Gut Draw
13 48% 28% 1.1 2.5
14 51% 30% 0.95 2.3
15 54% 33% 0.85 2.1 Flush+Open Draw
16 57% 34% 0.75 1.9 Flush+Open+One Overcard
17 60% 37% 0.66 1.7

How many outs does your hand have? This is your first consideration. Outs are the cards in the deck that help you create a hand. There are thirteen cards in each suit. If you hold two of them and two more are on the flop, then you have nine outs to get your flush.

These are just the beginning considerations for hand odds in poker. Your adventure in calculating poker odds has only just begun!

PostHeaderIcon Winning Playing Online At Video Poker

pokerWhen it became economical to combine a television like monitor with a computer type CPU, Video poker intentially became commercially viable. When the first computers came out the first models of video poker appeared and these are available for online gambling at online casinos or at any one particular online casino. The first models were rather primitive by today’s standards.
When SIRCOMA, which stands for Si Redd’s Coin Machines, become prevalent, Video poker became more firmly established. They introduced Draw Poker in 1979, and it has subsequently become very popular at online casinos for online gambling. It was during the 80s that video poker took off at brick and mortar casinos and through the late 90s that it became popular at online casinos.
Today, video poker enjoys a prominent place on the gaming floors of many casinos. It is also very popular for online gambling at any one of the hundreds of online casinos that offer video poker. If you play video poker at an online casino you have the advantage of being able to play from the comfort of your own home at any time of day or night.
Playing video poker at an online casino is a good idea since you can take your time and draw the right cards rather than choking and rushing a bad decision, which is something that you never want to do when playing video poker at an online casino.
